Ketek, Germany, has established itself as a developer and producer of advanced silicon radiation detectors in a high-end niche. The founder and owner of the company is a world-famous scientist who faces the realities of the marketplace, trying to stay ahead of competitors, protect his ideas and manage costs.

German physicist Dr Josef Kemmer spent years in university laboratories and research institutes creating some of the most difficult technologies in the semiconductor field. Today, his challenges are more prosaic: learning how to protect and exploit his inventions with limited funds. Yet, as with a lot of small and mid-size companies, intellectual property issues often take a back seat to creating new technologies.β€œ We need to develop new products,” explains Dr Kemmer. β€œIt is the most cost-effective way to use our time.”
